The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team played their first games of the 2025 season at Wade Stadium today, breaking out the brooms for the doubleheader sweep against the Minot State University Beavers
Â
Game One: UMD (9) - MISU (2)
Â
The Bulldogs took the lead early into the contest, cashing in on an RBI base hit that found the right field grass from Gabe Richardson to gain the 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.
Â
The scoring continued in the bottom of the second with the Bulldogs adding another on a deep double from Kade Peloquin and later pushing another across home with a bases loaded walk to grow the UMD lead to 3-0.
Â
The Beavers got on the board in the top of the fourth, scoring two on a two run home run from Oscar Pegg and getting back within one.
Â
UMD answered back in the bottom of the inning by scoring on a triple down the right field line from Sam Kliber and an RBI single from Richardson, putting the Bulldogs back in the lead by multiple runs.
Â
A bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth brought Richardson back up to the plate, who tallied another two RBIs on a single out to right. A subsequent double from Troy Lynch cleared the rest of the bases, growing the Bulldog lead to 9-2 which would hold for the rest of game one.
Â
Game Two: UMD (10) - MISU (7)
Â
The second contest of the day started with yet another Bulldog lead, as an RBI base hit from Garrett Stauffacher to left center field tallied the first run of the evening.
Â
Another RBI for Stauffacher was tallied in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly to score Peloquin, giving the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead.
Â
With runners on the corners, a dual steal situation for the Beavers added their first run of the night on the board in the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs were quick to answer though, getting a run back on an RBI single up the middle from Kliber.
Â
Back to back RBI singles in the top of the fifth for MISU saw the first tie of the evening for the two teams, but UMD quickly took back the lead with a third RBI from Stauffacher on a base hit to right field.
Â
Things tied right back up in the top of the sixth on a RBI base hit up the middle for Minot State.
Â
An RBI double from Stauffacher and back to back RBI base hits from Hayden Anthony and Henry Bushey put the Bulldogs back ahead 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh.Â
Â
The lead continued to grow in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double from Nathan Rosenberg, another RBI sacrifice fly from Stauffacher, and an RBI triple from Peloquin to make it 10-4.
Â
The Beavers would go on to launch a three run home run in the top of the ninth to make it 10-7, but it proved to be too little too late as the Bulldogs came out on top to secure the doubleheader sweep.
