Bulldogs Tame Mustangs in St. Cloud for Season Sweep

Make it four in a row and a season sweep of the Mustangs.

The University of Minnesota Duluth capped off two more wins Sunday afternoon at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minn. The Bulldogs secured their third Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference sweep as they registered a 7-0 win in game one and a narrow 5-4 victory in game two over Southwest Minnesota State University.

UMD now stands at 28-12 overall and 8-4 in the NSIC after taking down the Mustangs (22-20, 4-12 NSIC), who they defeated twice back in the season-opening weekend in non-conference action also in St. Cloud.

Senior Allison Luoma and sophomore Maddy Walsh combined to shutout SMSU in the first game. Luoma went the first six innings, securing her 10th win of the season. She gave up just five hits and a walk while tossing five strikeouts. Walsh mopped up the final inning holding a huge lead fanning one Mustang in the four batters she faced.

The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with four runs. They added two more in the fifth and one final tally in the sixth for the 7-0 shutout victory – the second 7-0 blanking of SMSU in 2025.

Senior infielder Nicole Schmitt and sophomore infielder Khendal Johnson paced the UMD bats with two hits a piece. Schmitt tacked on RBI 51 and 52 of the year on her double down the left field line in the sixth. Johnson had a pair of doubles which pushed her season total to nine doubles.

Junior catcher Kendal Jenkins drove in her 26th RBI and her fourth in the last six games. Jenkins originally broke the 0-0 deadlock on a single to right. The Bulldogs would score two more in the inning on an error and one on a first-and-third double steal attempt.

After a brief intermission, it didn't take long for UMD to strike.

The Bulldogs erupted for all five runs in the second frame with a key hit by junior outfielder Morgan McMillan. After a bases-loaded walk after a hellacious 14 pitch battle by sophomore outfielder Billi Connell, who also had a pitch-hit RBI in the opener, McMillan found the outfield grass and the fence on a bases clearing double. She would score later on a pass ball. The Roseville, Calif. native now has 27 RBI, a new single-season high.

UMD only had four hits but made the most of its opportunities. Along with McMillan, sophomore outfielder Emma Ambroz, Jenkins, and freshman infielder Taryn Christopher each had hits. Ambroz continued her steady diet at the plate as she has a hit in eight of the last 10 contests.

Junior pitcher Allyssa Williams took home her fifth straight win as she continues to be a steady hand in the circle of the backend of doubleheaders. Williams tossed a complete-game victory despite giving up a season-high 12 hits to the Mustangs. She recorded her fourth straight appearance with at least five strikeouts.

For the season, Williams is 12-6 with a 2.38 ERA and 86 strikeouts. In her breakout season, she has already posted single-season career bests in wins, ERA, strikeouts, game started, complete games, opposing batting average and innings pitched.

UMD returns to the diamond starting Wednesday for a NSIC double dip against St. Cloud State University. First pitch at Malosky Stadium will commence at 2:00 p.m.
