Cane Collects 300 Career Win, Shromoff and the Bulldogs Rout Sioux Falls 5-1

On a foggy Friday night in Duluth, Minn. inside James S. Malosky Stadium, Greg Cane, the only head coach the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer program has ever known, earned his 300th collegiate career win on a decisive 5-1 Bulldog triumph over the University of Sioux Falls in Northern Intercollegiate Sun Conference play.

Cane picked up 300 with the most goals from a UMD side since the 2023 season, and it started with the first of two goals by Kaitlyn Beavers 28:12 into the first half. Elaina Shromoff warmed up for her eventual hat trick with a goal at the 31:56 mark off a corner kick, and the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 3-0 on a second corner kick goal by Shromoff at 38:46.

The Bulldogs added a fourth goal before half for good measure when Beavers finished off a ball served in by Jessica Eischens at 42:08 for a 4-0 UMD advantage in the first 45 minutes.

Shromoff made a little of her own history six and a half minutes in the second half, unloading on a rebound in the box for her first collegiate hat trick. Shromoff becomes the 26th player in program history to score three or more goals in a game, and the first Bulldog to do it since Anna Tobias did it against the University of Minnesota Crookston on Sept. 17, 2023.

UMD dropped its bid for a shutout, however, with an own goal at 62:33, but the Cougars were unable to generate any offense of their own. The Bulldogs outshot USF 15-2 (8-1 on goal) and had six corner kicks while holding the Cougars without a single attempt. Morgan Jost had three saves for USF, who falls to 1-2-0 and 0-1-0 in NSIC action, while Kaycee Chavez made one for the Bulldogs.

UMD (2-1-1, 1-0-0) will continue its three-game homestand on Sunday when it hosts Southwest Minnesota State University at 12:00 p.m. in Malosky Stadium.

BULLDOG NOTES: Greg Cane is now 300-243-55 over his 35 overall seasons in women's college soccer ... the win ranks him 15th among all Division II active head coaches and second among all NSIC soccer coaches ... all-time at UMD, Cane has a record of 285-209-64, while his overall coaching record includes four seasons at the NCAA Division III College of St. Scholastica.
