The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team wrapped up two win Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference weekend Sunday, defeating Southwest Minnesota State University 2-0 inside James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.
Â
The Bulldogs offensively pressured the Mustangs from the opening whistle and found the net by way of Nora Helvig's first collegiate goal in the 24th minute to take the 1-0 lead. The play came off a corner kick, and after the ball left the box, Savannah Gieske found Helvig, who turned and struck her first collegiate goal past SMSU goaltender Kennedy Krebs.
Â
After UMD outshot the Mustangs 10-0 in the first half, the second half turned a bit more physical, and the Bulldogs were whistled for 11 infractions alone in the second frame. UMD once again relied on its impactful corner kick at the 73rd minute for its second goal, and doubled up its lead when Juliana Zerna found Jessica Eischens  her first goal of the season.
Â
The Bulldogs were once again dominant on the corner kick front, and had nine attempts to the just one they allowed the Mustangs. In all, UMD outshot SMSU 15-3 and the Mustangs – now 1-3-0 and 0-2-0, got six saves from Krebs, while senior goaltender Kaycee Chavez turned in three in her third shutout of the season.
