The good news for the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team Friday afternoon was that it extended its current unbeaten streak to three games. The bad news for the Bulldogs was that Wayne State College also was able to keep its current unbeaten streak intact.
The Bulldogs and Wildcats battled to a 1-1 tie in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on the WSC Soccer Field in Wayne, Neb., UMD's first league action on the road this season. UMD edged WSC in shots on goal 6-4 and had seven corner kicks to the Wildcats three, but both teams were able to manage just one goal in the contest.
UMD's goal came from graduate forward
Morgan Eckerle at the 37:48 mark of the first half, a half volley that sailed over WSC goaltender Alexa Hofstetter head for Eckerle's first goal of the season.
That 1-0 lead would hold until the 73rd minute, when Wildcat Rachel Davis netted a WSC penalty kick to draw the game even at 1-1.
Both
Jessica Eischens and
Kaitlyn Beavers led all players with four shots each. UMD goaltender
Kaycee Chavez made three saves in the contest, while her counterpart for the now 3-0-3 overall and 2-0-1 in NSIC play Wildcats, Hofstetter, had five.
The Bulldogs (3-1-2, 2-0-1) will head to Sioux Falls, SDÂ for more NSIC action where they will face Augustana University Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
