UMD Football Shatters Golden Bears 61-7 In First NSIC Match

The University of Minnesota Duluth football team extended to a perfect 2-0 start to the 2025 season after downing Concordia University St. Paul 61-7 Saturday night at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.

UMD picks up its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win of the season and a perfect 2-0 start to the 2025 season.

The Bulldog's offense combined for 444 yards (241 passing, 203 rushing) with quarterback Kyle Walljasper putting up 156 passing yards with an average of 70%. He threw three touchdowns and ran in one before passing off the ball to Jacob Eggert, who threw for 85 yards and one touchdown.

UMD's own redshirt sophomore Jonathan Shrum returned the kickoff across 90 yards for the Bulldogs' first kickoff touchdown since the 2023 season. The last time this was achieved, it was done by teammate DeShaun Ames against Winona State University in a 93-yard sprint.

The Bulldogs continued smothering the Golden Bears as the defense returned the ball to Walljasper with 11:35 left in the first quarter. The offense proceeded in sync over 38 seconds until Ben Fritsch broke free for a 45-yard touchdown reception from Walljasper to push a 13-0 lead.

UMD was not content with just two touchdowns in the first quarter; with under three minutes remaining, the offense would find an opening to help Walljasper steamroll his second rushing touchdown of the year (7-yard rush).

The Bulldog offense only took 46 seconds into the second quarter to get another score as Walljasper connected with Luke Dehnicke for a 48-yard touchdown to mark the score at 26-0. The defense put together another stop to hand the ball back at 9:57, where it took under four minutes to get another score, this time on a four-yard rush from Alex Riley.

With another successful extra point from Jadon Apgar, the team led 33-0 with 5:58 before halftime. A timely sack from Mark Rendl gave the ball back to the offense after just 53 seconds of CSP offense.

As only three seconds remained before halftime, Walljasper connected with Francis O'Malley for his first career touchdown as a redshirt freshman.

Coming out of halftime, the Bulldogs were far from done, as three plays into the CSP offense, a quick read from Luke Humbert got him in perfect position for UMD's first pick-six of the 2025 season.

Catcher Langeness added to the Bulldog onslaught with 5:36 left off an 11-yard rushing touchdown to mark UMD's unanswered scoring run at 54-0. CSP finally got on the scoreboard with over two minutes remaining in the third quarter to cut the lead to 54-7.

In the final quarter, UMD's Eggert threw redshirt freshman Peyton Menzel his first career touchdown on a 24-yard gain to mark the final score at 61-7.

Jayce Walrath led the team in total tackles with five, while Preston McQueen and Mark Rendl each earned a sack to keep CSP off balance. Humbert's interception and touchdown measured in at 63 yards to eclipse last season's one from Jacob Mogensen (28 yards vs. SMSU). The defense kept the Golden Bears' offense to 109 rushing yards to allow the offense to nearly double it with 203.

The Bulldogs return to James S. Malosky Stadium next week to celebrate Military Appreciation Day while hosting Minnesota State University Mankato. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. next Saturday.

BULLDOG NOTES: Shrum's kickoff return touchdown marks the program's first since 2023… Humbert's pick six is the first since last season and eclipses it 63 to 28 yards… UMD now owns a 14-3 record over CSP with a 12-game winning streak since 2005… UMD marked a staggering 6-2 record in St. Paul… the Bulldogs nearly matched their highest scoring effort from last season (62-0 vs. SMSU)... UMD has now outscored its first two opponents 96-14.
