The No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the young season Friday morning in Burlington, Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse, a 3-0 loss at the hands of the University of Vermont.
The Catamounts notched a goal in every period, and their score from Morgan Skoda, that beat freshman goaltender Marilou Grenier over her shoulder, came just 6:23 into the first frame.
Vermont struck again 16:31 into the second period on a goal from Stella Retrum, and put the game out of reach in the third stanza on a power play goal at 17:36 by Kaylee Lewis.
UMD outshot UVM 36-27 overall and in each period, including 13-7 in the final frame. Grenier, making her first start in net for the Bulldogs, made 24 saves for UMD, while Tara Bach had 36 for the Catamounts. UVM was 1-of-4 on its power play – the Bulldogs were 0-of-2 and still looking for their first power play tally of the season.
Caitlin Kraemer led all skaters with nine shots in the game.
UMD (2-1-0) will regroup to face Vermont (1-0-0) again Saturday. Puck is set to drop at 12:00 p.m. CST.
