Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Augustana Upsets No. 5 Bulldogs in 4-3 in Overtime

Augustana University struck 20 seconds into overtime to slip past the No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team Friday night by a 4-3 score inside MIDCO Arena in Sioux Falls, SD.

The nonconference loss was the Bulldogs first setback of the season, and the second in three games against the Vikings over the past two seasons.

UMD's power play put the first goal of the game on the board when Callum Arnott shoveled in Jayson Shaugabay's feed in front of the net at 17:41 of the opening period. The goal's second assist went to Victor Plante -- his first career point as a Bulldog.

AU countered 50 seconds later, however, and both sides took a 1-1 stalemate into the first intermission, perhaps a foreshadowing of what was to come.

Barrett Hall stretched his current scoring streak to three games with 27 seconds left in the second period off a tip at the net front. Hall redirected Adam Kleber's shot from the point for his third-straight goal over his first three games as a Bulldog, and it handed UMD a 2-1 lead in the process.

The Vikings stormed back late in the third period to take a 3-2 lead, scoring two goals 17 seconds a part – Landon Fandel at 16:49 and Jacob Fletcher at 17:06.

But Bulldog late game closer Zam Plante wasn't done, and the junior backdoor slamming wizard picked right up where he left off at the end of last season, burying a feed from Shaugabay to make it a 3-3 game at 18:39 and force overtime.

Augustana needed just 20 seconds to win it, however, ringing it off the post for the 4-3 upset.

Ethan Dahlmeir had 26 saves in the loss for UMD, who also went 1-of-2 on the power play and held AU scoreless in five power play attempts. Mathis Langevin had 25 stops for the Vikings, who outshot UMD 30-28 and owned a 38-26 faceoff advantage in the game.

The Bulldogs (2-1-0) and AU will do it all over again tomorrow night inside MIDCO. The puck is set to drop at 6:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES: Jayson Shaugabay has now had three-straight multiple point games after dishing two passes Friday night … Shaugabay has seven points in his first three games of the season (1g, 6a) … four other players have notched points in their first three games … Callum Arnott (2g, 3a, and who has both of UMD's power play goals), Hunter Anderson (1g, 4a), Ty Hanson (1g, 4a) and Barrett Hall (3g) … the Bulldogs continue to own a perfect penalty kill … UMD has killed off 15-straight power plays … Augustana now has a 2-1 advantage over the Bulldogs after also splitting with them last season … the Vikings also scored four goals in their one win against UMD in the series opener at AMSOIL Arena.
