UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Classroom

13 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey players have been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar Athletes, the league announced Thursday.

Of the 13, five are repeat honorees -- redshirt senior Mary Kate O'Brien (Wilbraham, Mass.) earns her fourth honor, while sophomore Anna Byczek (Marquette, Mich.), junior Ève Gascon (Mascouche, Quebec), junior Ida Karlsson (Avesta, Sweden), and junior Grace Sadura (Chanhassen, Minn.) all land their second honors. Sophomore Kamdyn Davis (Beloit, Wis), senior Thea Johansson (Ljungby, Sweden), sophomore Kate Kosobud (Morrhead, Minn.), sophomore Zoey Krock (Pittsburgh, Pa.), graduate Ashley Messier (Wilcox, Saskatchewan, sophomore Josie St. Martin (Stillwater, Minn.) and senior Krista Parkkonen all earn the accolade in their first season eligible for the award, while Devyn Millwater earns her first Scholar Athlete nod after picking up four previous All-WCHA Academic Team nods.
As a program, UMD has now had 153 WCHA Scholar Athletes since the league began the honor 19 years ago, and 32 student-athletes have earned the distinction three or more times. The Bulldogs had a record 15 selections in 2020-21.Â
A total of nine WCHA athletes earned the honor this season. The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through member team Faculty Representatives and approved by the conference membership for the 2005-06 season. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his/her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.
