No. 14 Minnesota State Stuns No. 9 Bulldogs with Double-Overtime WCHA Quarterfinal Win to Force Game Three Sunday

Despite outshooting No. 14 Minnesota State University, Mankato by a 2-to-1 margin Saturday, the No. 9 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team fell 2-1 in double overtime at AMSOIL Arena in game two of the best-of-three series to determine who will advance to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Final Faceoff.

The Bulldogs had no problems generating offense on the day, but they couldn't solve Maverick goaltender Hailey Hansen, who had 57 saves on the afternoon.

"I thought we controlled the majority of the game," said UMD head coach Laura Schuler. "I thought we played with good pace, good energy. I thought our structure was great. ?You know, sometimes in playoff hockey, it comes down to moments and they capitalized on one, and we didn't. We had a lot of chances and I think that's what's important for us going into tomorrow is that we believe in what we're doing, and we continue to bring that kind of a mentality to how we play, because when we play to our identity, that gives us a chance to win."

MSU put the Bulldogs on notice early, striking just 3:05 into the opening period to take the game's opening lead.

UMD's Thea Johansson, fresh off her Olympic goal scoring run, restarted her Bulldog scoring ways at 4:35 of the second period. Johansson used a screen from Caitlin Kraemer through the slot to beat Hansen five-hold and knot the game up at 1-1.

But despite a Bulldog onslaught of shots through regulation – a 35-17 UMD advantage and a late power play at 17:12 for UMD – the Bulldogs and Mavericks needed two more periods of play to determine a winner.

That moment finally came at 15:56 of the second overtime, on a goal from Whitney Tuttle that extended the series in an instance.

"I mean, the game is about scoring goals and they had two today and we had one, so at the end of the day, that's kind of what we got to take with us," said Johansson.  "I think just like not even let them in the game, I feel like after they score their goal there, we kind of stepped up and we started playing our type of hockey and we controlled the game, as I said, but, yeah, we just have to learn how to have a better start I think."

UMD outshot MSU 58-27 in the game, including 23-9 in both overtimes. Eve Gascon had 25 stops for the Bulldogs, who were scoreless in four power play attempts and held the Mavericks with a goal in their single attempt.

The Bulldogs (20-13-3) will play a winner takes all game tomorrow afternoon to decide who will travel to Mendota Heights, Minn. to play in the WCHA Final Faceoff semifinals on Thursday. Puck drop is set for 1:00 p.m.
