Wilkinson Pitches Game One Shutout Win, Bulldog Baseball Splits Road Doubleheader with Jamestown

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team split with the University of Jamestown at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win in game one by the Bulldogs before the Jimmies won the second game 10-8.

 

Game One, 6-0 UMD Win

UMD recorded 10 hits, marking their second consecutive game achieving at least 10 hits, and held Jamestown to just five. The Bulldogs' pitchers combined for seven scoreless innings and four strikeouts.

 

In the first inning, UMD took an early lead when Sam Kliber walked, followed by Hayden Anthony's single – who has now recorded two or more hits in back-to-back games. Troy Lynch then singled to right, bringing Kliber home. Nikhil Kandi's double allowed Anthony to score, and Logan Myers grounded out, bringing Lynch home, to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead after one inning.

 

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fourth inning on a double from Henry Bushey, who then scored on Michael Gabbard's single. After Kliber was hit by a pitch, Anthony singled to right, driving in Gabbard and Kliber, pushing the lead to 6-0.

 

Henry Wilkinson pitched a complete seven-inning game for UMD, allowing five hits and striking out four, to secure a shutout victory. Wilkinson also recorded a season-high total of two putouts and scattered five hits across his outing and struck out four batters while issuing no walks. Wilkinson's efficient 81-pitch effort also secured him his first win of the season.

 

Kliber scored two runs and drew a walk, contributing to the offensive output. Anthony collected two hits and crossed the plate once, while Lynch recorded one hit, drove in a run, and scored. Wilkinson delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching 7 innings with four strikeouts and earning the win. Both Bushey and Gabbard have also recorded at least two hits in consecutive games. This game also marked the fifth consecutive game in which the Bulldogs scored at least six runs.

 

Game Two, 10-8 UMD Loss

Despite recording 11 hits and five doubles, UMD was unable to overcome Jamestown's 14-hit performance.

 

The Bulldogs fell behind early as the Jimmies scored twice in the first inning. Nelson doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, followed by Thomas scoring on a walk. The Jimmies led 2–0 after the first inning.

 

In the second inning, Nelson scored again for the Jimmies, extending their lead to 3–0. Thomas's single brought Nelson home for the run. The score stood at 3–0 in favor of Jamestown after two innings.

 

UMD responded in the third inning. Gabe Richardson walked, allowing Michael Gabbard to score. Troy Lynch followed with a single, driving in Sam Kliber and Hayden Anthony to tie the game at 3–3. However, Jamestown regained the lead with two more runs, making it 5–3 after three innings. 

 

In the fifth inning, Richardson singled, and Lynch doubled to drive him in. Garrett Stauffacher hit a two-run double, bringing home Lynch and Michael Reem. The Bulldogs took the 6–5 lead by the end of the fifth. 

 

The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth. Anthony reached on an error and scored on a Richardson double, extending the lead to 7–5. Jamestown surged back in the seventh inning with four runs, including a three-run double by Maldonado, to move ahead 9–7.

 

In the eighth inning, Nelson's double for the Jimmies brought home another run, while Lynch doubled for the Bulldogs, scoring Anthony and narrowing the deficit to 10–8 after eight innings.

 

UMD could not score in the ninth inning, sealing a 10–8 victory for the Jimmies.

 

Joe Herrick started the game, throwing two innings and allowing five runs on five hits, while striking out three and issuing five walks. Blake Eiden made a strong impact, pitching two 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four batters and allowing only two hits. Notably, Eiden recorded a season-high of 46 total pitches. Thomas Hanson closed out the bullpen's performance with two strikeouts over 2/3 of an inning without allowing any runs or hits.

 

Lynch recorded three hits and drove in four runs, including two doubles, Lynch for a season-high total of four runs batted in. Richardson added three hits and two RBIs, also drawing a walk in the game. Anthony scored three runs – season-high –, aided by reaching base on a hit by pitch and an error, and Stauffacher tallied three hits and two RBIs, with two of his hits being doubles for a season-high three hits. Michael Reem also stood out defensively, recording a season-high total of 12 putouts.
