In a single game Monday morning at the Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, ND, the University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team fell to the University of Mary 7-5 to closeout the three-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series. UMD's offense was highlighted by a home run as part of its 10-hit effort.
The Marauders jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, with a three-run homer. After two scoreless innings, UMD responded in the third.
Hayden Anthony, continuing his hot streak with at least two hits in consecutive games, homered to left field, followed by
Gabe Richardson and
Troy Lynch each hitting RBI doubles to tie the game at 3-3. Mary regained a 4-3 lead with a run in bottom of the third.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs leveled the score again when Anthony scored on a wild pitch, making it 4-4. However, the Marauders capitalized on two errors in the eighth, scoring three unearned runs to take a 7-4 lead.
UMD added a run in the ninth when Cade Chittum tripled and Richardson brought him home with a sacrifice fly. The final score stood Mary 7, UMD 5.
Jalen Pascal pitched five and 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, while striking out one batter and walking one, throwing 96 pitches with 64 strikes.
Brady Schornstein provided a strong relief performance, pitching one and 1/3 innings without giving up a run, surrendering just one hit and striking out two batters on 18 pitches.
Blake Eiden faced trouble in his brief 1/3 inning appearance, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit, with one walk and one hit-by-pitch.
Joe Gizzi closed the game with 2/3 inning, giving up one hit and one walk without allowing a run.
Anthony scored two runs and hit a home run, while
Gabe Richardson added one run and recorded two hits, including a double, while also driving in a run.
Troy Lynch collected two hits, one of which was a double, and recorded one run and one RBI.Â
The Bulldogs are now14-28 overall and 13-17 in the NSIC. UMD is scheduled to play its first games of the season in Duluth on Saturday and Sunday against Southwest Minnesota State University. Times and locations to be determined.
