Game Recap: Soccer |

Bulldogs Fall 2-1 to Northern Michigan in Marquette

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team suffered its first loss of the young season Sunday, a 2-1 defeat at the hands Northern Michigan University on the NMU Soccer Field in Marquette, Mich.

The Bulldogs recorded 20 shots – 10 on goal – but could not overcome the Wildcat's two-goal performance.

NMU got on the board just 44 seconds into the match when Isabella Lorens hit a cross that was one-timed by Alyse Daavettila for the 1-0 lead.

That 1-0 Wildcat advantage would hold through the rest of the first half and a majority of the second, but the Bulldogs finally broke through in 82nd minute on their second corner kick goal of the season. Julia Zerna's kick from the left corner was buried by the head of Lauren McGough – her second goal in as many games – to knot the game up at 1-1.

NMU responded less than two minutes later on a cross from Madison Bilbia to Addison Frantti in the six yard box for what was the eventual game-winner.

Kaitlyn Beavers led the Bulldogs with five shots, three of which were on goal, while McGough registered a goal and took seven shots, four of which were on target. Edy Halverson, in goal, recorded three saves over 90 minutes in her second career start at UMD.

UMD (1-1-0) will wrap up its nonconference play next Saturday in St. Cloud, Minn. when the will face St. Cloud State University. Game-time is slate for 1:00 p.m.
