The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team and Augustana University played to a 1-1 tie Friday night at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. It was the home opener for the Bulldogs, doubling as the first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Duluth this season.
UMD got on the board first with a goal from
Nora Helvig, her second in as many games, at the 11th minute mark. Helvig finished off a dropped pass back from
Lauren McGough, who had gotten the ball first from
Marissa VanDeHei, and just like that, the Bulldogs were up 1-0.
The Vikings equalized in the 26th minute on a corner kick goal from Reese Geiger, the first corner kick goal allowed by UMD this season. That 1-1 scored would hold until halftime -- the Bulldogs had outshot AU 8-6 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Vikings outshot UMD 9-4 in the second half and 10-7 in shots on goal, but neither team would strike again. Sophomore goaltender
Edy Halverson had nine saves for UMD, while AU's Linnea Larson had six. The Bulldogs had the slight edge in corner kicks of 6-5. Helvig led all players with a game-high six shots.
The Bulldogs (3-1-2, 2-0-1) will host Wayne State College at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Malosky Stadium.
