Lauren McGough's goal off a corner kick midway through the opening half lifted the University of Minnesota Duluh soccer team over Wayne State College 1-0 inside Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. Sunday afternoon. The win keeps the Bulldogs unbeaten in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at 3-0-1.
McGough's fourth goal of the season and third off the corner came in the 17th minute came off a
Juliana Zerna corner from the right side. McGough elevated over the Wildcat defender and hammered it by WSC goaltender Alexa Hofstetter with her head to push UMD in front 1-0.
The Wildcats best change to equalize came off a challenge with 20 minutes left in the second half that awarded WSC a penalty kick because of a Bulldog hand ball. But the Wildcats PK attempts went wide to the left of the goal post, preserving the 1-0 lead for the Bulldogs.
UMD had 15 shots on goal to WSC's seven, but the Bulldogs had a whopping 10 corner kicks while the Wildcats had just one. UMD had 11 fouls to WSC's seven.Â
Hofstetter had 14 saves in the loss for the 2-5-0, 1-3-1 Wildcats, while Edy Halverson had six for UMD in her third shutout of the season.
UMD (4-1-2, 3-0-1) will travel to the University of Mary next Friday before wrapping up its road weekend at at Minot State University on Sunday.
