BULLDOGS SIGN PAIR OF SIOUX CITY MUSKETEERS TO 2015-16 RECRUITING CLASS

Two standouts from the United States Hockey League's Sioux City Musketeers -- Adam Johnson and Neal Pionk -- have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and play hockey for the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Johnson, a 6-0, 155-pound center from Hibbing, Minn., is in his second full season of USHL competition and tops the 2014-15 Musketeers in scoring through 16 games with 18 points (the fifth highest output in the USHL) on a team-leading nine goals and nine assists. He also ranks first on the club in power play goals (three), game-winners (three), shorthanded goals (three) and shots (56). One year ago, Johnson racked up 46 points -- including 15 goals -- in 56 regular season outings to place fourth on the Sioux City scoring charts, a list that was headed by current UMD freshman center Jared Thomas. Johnson, whose father, Davey, was a four-year hockey letterman at UMD and captained the Bulldogs as a senior center in 1980-81, starred for four high school seasons with Hibbing/Chisholm and in 2012-13 was a finalist for 2012-13 Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award.

Pionk, a 5-11, 190-pound defenseman from Hermantown, Minn., is serving as the Muskeeters' team captain this season and at the 16-game juncture has generated 11 points (one goal and 10 assists) while going a +10. This December, he'll compete for the U.S. Select Team at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley, Saskatchewan after landing a spot on the all-tournament team at that same event the previous year. As USHL rookie, Pionk finished with two goals and 21 assists for 23 points -- eight of which came on the power play -- while taking part in 54 regular season games. He skated a regular shift for two seasons with the Hermantown High School varsity and made a pair of  Minnesota State Class A Tournament appearances before departing for the USHL following his junior season.
