Junior designated hitter
Tim Garceau joined a select group of University of Minnesota Duluth athletes today when he became just the second Bulldog to ever receive All-American baseball recognition. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America placed the Marinette, Wis. native on its NCAA Division II third team.
Pitcher/outfielder Tim Battaglia (Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association first team in 2003) is the only other UMD player to be so honored.
Garceau, a member of the 2005 All-North Central Conference team, finished first among Bulldogs this season in home runs with 13 and was second in that department among NCC combatants with eight. The 6-1, 195-pounder compiled a .367 overall batting average and a team-leading .707 slugging percentage en route to attaining American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division II All-Central Region second team acclaim. Garceau also worked 18 innings on the mound for UMD, holding opponents to a paltry .194 batting average, the lowest such figure posted by a Bulldog pitcher this season. He'll head into his senior season tied with Mike Petrich (1986-88; 1990) for fourth place on the UMD career home run charts with 27.
Garceau will report back to UMD in early August when the Bulldog football team begins preseason drills. Last fall as a sophomore, he topped UMD in interceptions (seven) while starting all 11 games at right cornerback.
