Ten weeks of Western Collegiate Hockey Association Hockey action has added up to ten University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey players earning weekly honors.
Saara Tuominen and
Heidi Pelttari joined the ranks of eight other previous Bulldog selections this season, ten now in just ten weeks, to be exact. Tuominen becomes the third UMD player to earn WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Pelttari joins three-time selection Kim Martin as the Defensive Player of the Week, the fourth such Bulldog selection this winter.
Tuominen, a sophomore forward from Ylojarvi. Finland, scored two goals and two assists in No. 3 UMD's weekend sweep over WCHA-rival Ohio State. She scored one goal and had an assist in last Saturday's 7-2 win, and then tallied one goal and assist Sunday in the Bulldogs' 4-0 victory. Tuominen currently leads both UMD and the WCHA in scoring with 27 points (10g, 17a), which also ranks her tenth nationally.
Pelttari, a sophomore defenseman, recorded four points in UMD's clean sweep of OSU. The product of Tampere, Finland, scored back-to-back goals for the Bulldogs last Saturday and added an assist in UMD's 7-2 series-opening triumph, while dishing out another assist in the Bulldogs' 4-0 blanking of the Buckeyes last Sunday. The defenseman was also +5 in the series, and leads all UMD blueliners in scoring this season with 12 points (3g, 9a).
The two Team Finland members will travel with the rest of their WCHA-leading Bulldog teammates this weekend when they face No. 4 St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. The rematch series of the 2006 NCAA Quarterfinals will start at 6 p.m. CST both Friday and Saturday nights.
