University of Minnesota Duluth senior hockey forward
Jessica Koizumi is one of 29 female student-athletes from a winter sport across the country who will be receiving an NCAA post-graduate scholarship. Koizumi, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., holds a 3.73 cumulative grade point average and is finishing up her bachelor's degree in psychology. She will be attending UMD in the fall to pursue a Master’s degree in education.
The NCAA awarded 58 scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 men and 29 women who participated in winter sports which included men's and women's basketball, men's fencing, men's and women's gymnastics, women's ice hockey, women's rifle, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field wrestling.
To qualify for an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.20 and must have performed with distinction as a member with his/her team.
Koizumi completed her final season with UMD this past March by leading the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish at the 2007 NCAA Frozen Four and a 24-11-4 record. Koizumi racked 40 points (22 goals and 18 assists) and paced the 2006-07 Bulldogs in game-winning goals with six. The last of those came in double-overtime against Boston College in the semifinal round of the Frozen Four.
For her career, the 2007 Frozen Four All-Tournament Team selection amassed an impressive 84 goals and 71 assists for 155 points in 132 games.
Koizumi was an All-WCHA Third Team selection this season and also earned WCHA All-Rookie Team accolades three years ago. She was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete on three occasions (2006-07, 2005-06) and was a three-time All-WCHA Academic team honoree(2006-07, 2005-06 and 2004-05).
Koizumi was the lone representative from the WCHA and was one of just 14 student-athletes competing at an NCAA Division I institution. UMD competes at the NCAA I level in ice hockey and at the NCAA II level in all other sports.
