For the second season in a row, University of Minnesota Duluth senior goalie
Riitta Schaublin, a recipient of numerous academic honors, was named to the 2006-07 CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team (Ice Hockey/At-Large). In 2006, Schaublin was bestowed with CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team honors (Ice Hockey/At-Large).
The first-ever two-time winner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s Student-Athlete of the Year Award (2006-07 and 2005-06), Schaublin is currently attending graduate school after completing her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and graduating Magna Cum Lada one year ago with a 3.94 cumulative grade point average. She was also a recipient of this year’s E.L. “Duce†Rasmussen Award as the UMD’s top-scholar athlete.
Schaublin, who has registered a perfect 4.00 grade point average while pursuing a Master’s degree in mathematics, earned WCHA All-Academic Team recognition on three occasions and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American (at-large) second team honoree as a junior. One the ice, the Basel, Switzerland product turned aside pucks in record-breaking fashion, setting UMD career marks for wins (65), saves (2,494), saves percentage (.932), shut outs (17), appearances (104) and starts (103). In 2005-06, Schaublin was a Patty Kazmaier Top 3 Finalist, as well as both an NCAA I All-American and All-WCHA first team pick after posting a school-record and an nation-best .943 saves percentage and seven shut outs. She helped backstopped the Bulldogs to NCAA playoff berths as a sophomore, junior and senior (when UMD advanced all the way to the championship game of the Frozen Four.)
Schaublin completed her final season in a Bulldog uniform this past March by leading UMD to a runner-up finish at the 2007 NCAA Frozen Four and a 24-11-4 record. She had a 13-4-2 record in goal this past season with 1.75 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.
