UMD WOMEN FINISH SEVENTH AT NCAA II CHAMPIONSHIPS; PLACE REPEATS AS ALL-AMERICAN

University of Minnesota Duluth sophomore Morgan Place turned in a sixth-place performance at Saturday's NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Evansville, Ind., marking the second time in as many seasons she has attained All-American status. As a team, UMD finished seventh out of 24 schools in the women's competition - the highest showing for the Bulldogs in their three appearances at the event.

Place, an Ellsworth, Wis., native, navigated the 6K course on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana in 20:53, besting her 2008 finishing time by more than a minute. The sixth-place finish in the184-runner field is the best individual showing at a national event, in school history (besting her finish of seventh in the 2008 championships). Only three other Bulldog female runners have reached NCAA All-American status in program history (Sara Frederickson in 2002, Tammy Stang in 2001 and Lynn Stottler in 1986).

A pair of UMD juniors - Michelle SanCartier and Bridget Hines - followed Place, turning in times of 22:42 (63rd overall) and 22:51 (70th), respectively. Senior Alyssa Wendt finished her Maroon and Gold career with a 77th-place showing, in a time of 23:00. Junior co-captain Rachael Stack was right on Wendt's heels, clocking in one place behind her with a time of 23:02. Two other Bulldogs - juniors Whitney Hines (23:09) and Carolyn Wardell (23:28) - also competed in Saturday's meet.

For the seventh consecutive season, Adams State College took home the women's team crown. Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific won her third-straight individual championship, with a time of 20:22.
