Just 24 hours after losing on a late jumper, the University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team found themselves on the other end of the spectrum, finishing off University of Mary at home in similar fashion Saturday, winning 72-70.
It was a tale of two separate days and one very similar weekend, as the Bulldogs (10-9 overall, 8-7 Northern Sun) drained 8 three-pointers and lead throughout most of the contest, after hitting nothing from beyond the arc and trying to come from behind the night before.
UMD forced 16 turnovers, as Mary (9-10, 7-8) started off slow, but challenged the Bulldogs for the final 25 minutes.
The Bulldogs controlled the pace throughout the first half, using hot shooting from beyond the arc to open up a 10-point advantage. UMD went 4-of-8 from three-point land, and shot 48 percent from the field.
Bulldogs' freshman forward Katrina Newman led the way in the first half, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and pacing all scorers with 11 points, while junior guard Lindsay Miller added 10.
The Marauders have proven all season long they are capable of sinking threes as well, and Mary used that ability to make a late push in the final six minutes of the half, tying the game at 34 by the break.
Mary hit 6-of-12 from beyond the arc after a cold start, as junior guard Kayla Schmidt knocked down three, and freshman forward McKenzie Foster added two more from three. Foster scored 10 of her 23 points in the first half, while Schmidt had nine of her 16.
Mary continued to rain threes in the second half, and controlled the lead until the two-minute mark, leading by as much as eight at one point. But Miller and sophomore guard Courtney Doucette took control late in the game, scoring 10 and points, respectively, leading UMD on a rally - capped by a six-foot runner Miller sank to give the Bulldogs a 72-70 lead with 13 seconds remaining in regulation.
Miller finished with a team-high 20 points, while Newman added 15. Junior guard Shelly Stemper scored with 11 points, while Doucette dropped in 10. Senior forward Kelsey Hewitt had a slower day from the field, but added seven rebounds to her seven points in the win. Miller led the team with five steals.
