The University of Minnesota Duluth offense exploded for five goals in a shutout victory over Wayne State (Neb.) College at Malosky Stadium on Friday evening.
With another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory, the Bulldogs move to 6-2-0 in 2013 (5-1-0 NSIC). Wayne State falls to 1-7-1 (1-4-1 NSIC).
UMD held the Wildcats without a shot in the first half, taking 26 of their own. Not surprisingly, it was senior forward
Dani Potter (15th minute) and junior forward
Maureen Stormont (18th) who got the scoring started in the first half. Each was assisted by junior midfielder
Jennifer Smith, who earned five points on the evening, scoring her first goal of the year in the 29th minute, an unassisted score.
While the Wildcats did come back with six shots in the second half, the Bulldogs' offense continued to be the story in the latter frame. Freshman midfielder
Marissa Ganske netted her second goal of the year just three minutes after the break with assists from Smith and Stormont, while her classmate
Kailey Beatt (Fr./M) netted her first of the year in the 79th minute, assisted by
Leah Nesheim.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Marissa Rosa earned her second shutout of 2013, needing just one save. The Bulldogs finished with 36 shots in the match, holding Wayne State to just six. Wildcats 'keeper Kylie Comba finished with 18 saves.
The Bulldogs continue Homecoming weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Augustana College.
