Box Score A tough middle frame put the University of Minnesota Duluth in a four-goal hole Friday night against St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs regained their form over the final 20 minutes of regulation, but could not undo the damage in suffering a 4-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association setback at the hands of the visitors in front of 1,015 at AMSOIL Arena.
Â
Following a scoreless opening period, the Huskies grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 1:27 mark of the second stanza. St. Cloud State maintained the momentum from there, adding a pair of even-strength markers and a power-play tally to take a 4-0 advantage into the second intermission. After the Huskies went up by four, sophomore goaltender Karissa Grapp came on in relief of UMD's Kayla Black, who made her sixth straight start in goal.
Â
Needing offense in a hurry, the Bulldogs bombarded the St. Cloud State net down the stretch, finishing with 53 shots on goal for the contest – including 31 in the third period. UMD then broke through at the 3:41 mark on a goal by rookie sensation Lara Stalder (her third of the year) to finish off a setup by Zoe Hickel and Ashleigh Brykaliuk – both of whom received helpers on the play.
Â
St. Cloud State (1-6-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the WCHA) relied on its goaltending from there, as Julie Friend made several big saves (and turned aside the final 16 shots she faced) to keep the Bulldogs (4-4-1; 2-4-1)Â at arm's length the rest of the way. The loss stops a two-game winning streak for UMD.
"The story title should read 'Halloween Horror Show,'" Bulldog head coach
Shannon Miller said, clearly disappointed by her club's performance. "The way our team showed up tonight was disrespectful to the tradition of this program, to our opponent and to our fans."
Â
The two teams will meet again at 6:07 p.m. to wrap up the two-game set.Â
