Box Score After St. Cloud State University pulled off a massive upset on Friday night, the University of Minnesota Duluth returned to AMSOIL Arena early on Saturday determined to get a better result. The Bulldogs didn't come away with an official victory, but thoroughly controlled the play before St. Cloud State jammed home the equalizer with under 30 seconds to go, forcing an eventual 1-1 overtime tie.
Â
The beginning phases of the contest mirrored the front end of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series, as once again neither team found a way to bury in the opening frame. UMD generated plenty of  scoring chances – and fired 12 shots on goal – through the first 20 minutes, but was thwarted each time by Husky goaltender Katie Fitzgerald.Â
Â
UMD (4-4-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the WCHA) used a power-play to grab a 1-0 lead 3:55 into the second on junior winger Jenna McParland's team-leading sixth marker of the season. The Bulldogs continued to maintain a strong edge in puck possession and limited St. Cloud State's ability to create high-percentage looks, but could not stretch the lead any further before the final minute of regulation. With time winding down and Fitzgerald lifted for an extra attacker, the Huskies maintained the offensive zone on a UMD clearing attempt from a few feet short of the blueline, then quickly fired the puck on net. Bulldog sophomore goaltender Kayla Black made the initial stop (for one of her 22 saves on the night) before St. Cloud State's Julia Gilbert got a stick on the rebound to tie it up with 22 seconds remaing and induce the five-minute extra session.
Â
Once overtime proved inconclusive, UMD went on to gain an extra point in the league standings behind a 2-0 shootout win. Junior Meghan Huertas roofed a backhander in the first round and Black denied both attempts she faced, setting up McParland to end the tiebreaker on a nifty back-handed move of her own.
"[Tonight was] better than last night. There's always room for improvement but we did do a lot better. We got a lot of chances that we couldn't put away, " said senior captain Jamie Kenyon, who assisted on McParland's goal. "At least we got the shootout win."
Â
The Bulldogs finished with 40 shots on goal and made good on one of three opportunities with the extra skater. St. Cloud State came up broke on its two power plays, bumping UMD's 10
th-ranked penalty kill efficiency to 89.1 percent on the season.
Â
Following a week off, the Bulldogs will return to action with a two-game set at Ohio State University Nov. 15-16.
