Box Score It didn't matter how it happened Friday afternoon, but the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team got exactly what it needed -- a win.
The Bulldogs knocked off St. Cloud State University 2-1 in St. Cloud, Minn. in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play to jump back into the win column and improve to 8-8-3 overall and 6-6-3 in the WCHA. The triumph also draws UMD an even 1-1-1 against the Huskies this season with the regular season tie-breaker set for tomorrow afternoon.
Unbeaten when it scores the first goal this season, UMD cracked the scoring open midway through the opening stanza. Senior forward
Jamie Kenyon banged home the puck after scuffle in front of the net to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead at 12:12. Kenyon doubled up UMD's goal count 2:25 later, rewarding the up ice passing efforts of linemates
Jenna McParland and
Hannah Bramm after the Bulldogs forced a St. Cloud turnover.
That score would hold for the following 34 minutes, despite a lop-sided six power-plays called in favor of the Huskies to the two for UMD. The Bulldogs stellar power-play unit -- ranked No. 8th in the NCAA currently -- finally flinched enough for SCSU to score on a 6-on-4 advantage with 52 seconds remaining in the game, but the Huskies would come no closer.
Sophomore goaltender
Kayla Black made 24 saves on the day while her counterpart in net for SCSU, Julie Friend, also turned away 24 shots. It also marked the third-straight came UMD has outshot its opponent.
Both teams will hit the ice again tomorrow at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center to wrap up their regular season meetings at 3:07 p.m.
