NO. 20 BULLDOGS DERAILED BY NO. 2 HUSKIES FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT NIGHT

Charlie Sampair scored on this shot to cut the St. Cloud State lead to 3-1 midway through the second period Saturday.
Box Score
There would be no second-night rebound victory for the University of Minnesota Duluth this time.

The Bulldogs, who were unbeaten in five of their six series rematch games this season, dropped a tough 4-2 decision to St. Cloud State University on Friday which set the stage for another second-night reversal. The No. 2-ranked Huskies, however, had different plans.

St. Cloud State jumped out to a 3-0 second-period lead and went on to down the No. 20 Bulldogs 5-1 to sweep the first-ever National Collegiate Hockey Conference series at AMSOIL Arena. Five different Huskies scored in the victory while sophomore left winger Charile Sampair accounted for the lone Bulldog goal, his second of the season, which came at 11:31 of the second period. Sophomore defenseman Andy Welinski, who set up that score by threading a perfect pass to Sampair, and sophomore center Cal Decowski, picked up the assists.

Senior senior Aaron Crandall stopped 20 of 25 St. Cloud State shots before being replaced by junior Alex Fons, who made two saves in the final 7:41 of play. Ryan Faragher finished with 19 stops for the Huskies.

The loss dropped UMD, which was without the services of rookie center Dominic Toninato (illness), sophomore defenseman Willie Corrin (injury) and freshman defenseman Dan Molenaar (injury) to 6-7-1 overall and 2-4-0-0 in the NCHC.

"I thought we gave them some easy goals," said UMD head coach Scott Sandelin. "We played a lot on the perimeter tonight and lost a lot of battles -- you are not going to win many games doing that."

UMD will remain at home to host NCHC colleague Western Michigan University next Friday and Saturday night in the Bulldogs' final two appearances of 2013. Saturday's game will be televised live nationally by CBS Sports Network.
