POWER-PLAY GOALS PUSH NO. 2 WISCONSIN PAST BULLDOGS SATURDAY

Jamie Kenyon had UMD's lone goal against No. 2 Wisconsin Saturday.
Box Score Hard to argue with the Univeristy of Wisconsin's seecond-ranked power-play after Saturday afternoon.

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wisc. after the No. 2 Badgers -- with the second-best power-play in the NCAA -- used two goals with an extra skater to slip past the Bulldogs.  Despite missing their two-top defenseman (Lara Stalder and Tea Villila) to the Olympics, UMD kept pace with UW and remained fiesty throughout the entire outing.

The Badgers netted two goals in the first period, including a power-play tally 7:37 into the game by Blayre Turnbull and then a score by Rachel Jones 10:11 later.  Brittany Ammerman gave UW a 3-0 lead 6:11 into the second period, scoring the Badgers second power-play goal of the day.

Despite being outshot 29-14 in the first two periods, UMD kept churning away.  Freshman Ashleigh Brykaliuk was sprung by defenseman convert Jenna McParland around the 11 minute mark for a breakaway, narrowly stopped by Badger goaltender Alex Rigsby.  Then four minutes later, Jamie Kenyon buried a pass from Katerina Mrázová from the near post circle, beating Rigsby five-hole for her 12th goal of the season and getting the Bulldogs on the board at 3-1.

UMD (11-9-5, 9-7-5) and UW (20-3-2, 16-3-2) were near even in shots in the third perod, with the Badgers putting up eight and 37 overall and the Bulldogs registering seven and 21.  Sophomore goaltender Kayla Black made 34 saves for UMD, while Rigsby had 20 for UW.  The Badgers converted 2-of-5 power-play, but the Bulldogs were scoreless in three attempts.

Both teams will close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 3:07 p.m.
