Box Score Bemidji State University needed a win to clinch the top seed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division, but the University of Minnesota Duluth would not allow it at their expense as the Bulldogs earned a bit of revenge, knocking off the Beavers 81-65 at Romano Gym on Friday night.
After limping off the court just one week ago and missing a game for the first time in his UMD career, senior guard
Peter Crawford returned to floor with a 13-point effort, but it was his fellow senior,
Jordan Reetz who shined for the Bulldogs (11-14, 9-12 NSIC), tying his career high with 35 points on the night.
The opening half was quick, with just 30 minutes passing on the clock, but both teams' offenses were methodical, each team shooting right around 40 percent as Bemidji State (18-7, 15-6 NSIC) edged UMD on a buzzer-beating three by Brock Lutes 30-29 at the half. Lutes was 2-of-5 from beyond the arc in the opening frame, but it was Reetz' 5-for-8 mark that kept the Bulldogs afloat. UMD made just one trip to the line - an and-one by Crawford - as the teams had just eleven combined fouls. The Bulldogs had four players with at least an assist and 10 on their 11 shots in the opening half.
As UMD pulled away on the scoreboard, they kept Bemidji out of rhythm and finally found their way to the line, with Crawford finishing 7-for-7 from the charity stripe as UMD went 13-of-16 as a squad in the second half. Likewise, UMD's shooting came alive as Reetz went off for 20 of his 35 after the break, and junior guard
Reece Zoelle added 13 to finish with 20 on the night. The Bulldogs shot 76.0 percent, 19-of-25 in the second half. On the other end of the court, the Bulldogs got the Beavers out of rhythm and it showed as Bemidji shot just 46.4 percent and went 0-for-6 from three-point range. UMD had 27 defensive rebounds on the night compared to just six offensive rebounds for Bemidji. Zoelle led the way with a game-high nine as he again neared a double-double. Zoelle also tied with junior guard
Junior Coleman with a game-high four assists on the night.
The Bulldogs will look for another revenge win and to end the regular season on a positive note tomorrow when they match-up again with North Division foe Minnesota Crookston (4-20, 1-19 NSIC). UMD will honor Crawford and Reetz on "Senior Night" Saturday with opening tip set for 6:00 p.m.
