Box Score Officially, it was Senior Night for the the University of Minnesota Duluth, but junior guard
Reece Zoelle and UMD's underclassmen made it their night as the Bulldogs dominated in an 84-54 victory over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival the University of Minnesota-Crookston to close out the regular season at Romano Gym on Saturday night.
While seniors
Peter Crawford and
Jordan Reetz have led the offense all season for UMD (12-14, 10-12 NSIC), they could take a night off with their fellow Bulldogs' clicking in this revenge win over the Golden Eagles (4-22, 1-21 NSIC). Reetz finished with 16 points, right in line with his season average, while Crawford collected just one three-pointer, but added three assists while nursing his injured ankle.
Zoelle had 12 points in the opening half to lead the Bulldogs, as UMD shot 45.5 percent including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Minnesota Crookston went 8-of-26 in the first half, collecting just one offensive rebounds to 17 for the Bulldogs on defense. In the second half, UMD broke away by shooting 60.7 percent to finish at 52.5, or 32-of-61, on the night. The Eagles shot 34.8 percent for the game and collected just 20 total rebounds.
Zoelle would finish with a game-high 23 points, while Derrick Redd led the way for UMC with 15, but also added three steals on the night. Seven true freshmen combined for 32 points for the Bulldogs, including a career-high nine from reserve guard
Treyton Daniels. Freshman guard
Jake Wilson had eight points and six rebounds, while freshman forward
Lane Olson finished with a team-high seven boards. UMC turned the ball over eight times and seven additional times on errant shots ending in defensive team rebounds.
The Bulldogs travel to Fayette, Iowa on Wednesday night, opening the NSIC/Sanford Health Posteason Tournament against fourth-seeded Upper Iowa. The Peacocks barely edged UMD 87-85 last Friday night in Fayette, so UMD will have revenge on its mind. Game time is yet to be determined.
