The University of Minnesota Duluth drew the curtain on the 2014 season Sunday morning with a 9-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road loss to nationally-ranked and regular season league champion Augustana College. The Bulldogs finished the year at 1-11 overall and 1-10 in NSIC play.
"No doubt, we hit a number rough patches along the way, starting with losing our No. 1 singles player, junior
Alyssa Brunelli, to a season-ending knee injury a few weeks before our first match," said second-year Bulldog head coach
Bob Skenzich. "But through it all, this team remained positive and focused while maintaining a terrific work ethic day in and day out. I'm truly proud of the progress they all made and am excited and optimistic about their future."
Sunday's loss marked the end of the collegiate line of UMD's lone senior,
Kelsey Cunningham, who was relegated to mainly doubles play this spring because of a nagging shoulder injury.
Sophomore
Delaney Dobbs paced the 2014 Bulldogs in both singles victories (six) and singles winning percentage (.600 off a 6-4 record at No. 5 and No. 6) while freshman
Kaitlin Wohnoutka was close behind in both departments, wrapping up her debut season with an even 5-5 singles mark, all at No. 4. Another one of the Bulldogs' many promising newcomers,
Briana Rademacher, went 4-8 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and teamed with Cunningham to go 5-7 in doubles.
