The University of Minnesota Duluth hit the road once again less than 24 hours after returning to Duluth for another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader against the University of Mary on Tuesday afternoon, earning a split against the Marauders.

U-Mary handed the Bulldogs (8-19, 4-13 NSIC) a 7-3 loss in game one, controlling the game nearly from the on-set, while game two was a back-and-forth affair that required 14 innings before the Bulldogs broke through to earn a 6-5 win.

Six straight batters reached for U-Mary (11-23, 6-12 NSIC) to start the second inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by senior catcher Sam Ingemansen. Sophomore lefty Charlie Conkel closed out the inning but suffered the loss after allowing five hits and five earned runs and getting six outs. The Bulldogs plated three runs in the fourth with freshman designated hitter Grant Farley driving in sophomore Alex Wojciechowski on a double down the leftfield line before junior catcher Beau Goff sent him home on an RBI single. Farley would then come in to pitch the final two innings for UMD, picking up three strikeouts while allowing a run as the Marauders added a pair of runs late, holding off the Bulldogs despite a pair of threats in the sixth and seventh innings.

Coach Bob Rients sent out a new-look line-up for game two, and UMD responded with a first-inning run on an RBI groundout by Wojciechowski. U-Mary answered back with runs in the third and fourth inning on an RBI single by senior shortstop Alex Deyle and a wild pitch. The Bulldogs tied the game in the sixth when sophomore Kyle Comer doubled home a run in his return to the line-up, setting the teams fresh for the final three innings.

Another Farley double sparked the go-ahead rally for UMD in the eighth inning with a fielding error and a Cody Aasen (Sr./LF) RBI single putting the Bulldogs up. Follow-up singles by pinch hitter Matt Vogt (Fr.) and designated hitter Joe Balestreri (Jr.) put UMD up by a pair, but after four perfect innings to start his outing, senior Chris Couillard surrendered a game-tying home run by U-Mary junior slugger Jason Shaul that sent the game into extras. Five innings later, UMD broke through when senior pinch hitter Kellen McCoshen doubled home Farley and fellow freshman Skyler Wenninger. After a U-Mary rally which plated a run in the bottom half of the inning, freshman Marco Lucarelli came in to close out the final two outs and earn the save.

The Bulldogs continue with NSIC play this weekend against the University of Sioux Falls, but snow in the forecast may further delay UMD's return to Bulldog Park. Stay tuned in the coming days for updates.
