The University of Minnesota Duluth earned its first four-game series sweep of the season, taking both ends of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on the road against the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday afternoon.
UMD (12-19, 8-13) continued a five-game winning streak with a 7-4 victory in game one before a walk-off hit-by-pitch of sophomore utility man
Josh Denisen plated the winning run in a 5-4 comeback victory in game two. Junior catcher
Beau Goff continued his tear, going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI to finish the weekend hitting .642 (9-14) with six runs scored, an RBI, and two walks. Sophomore shortstop
Kyle Comer continued his high-flying return to the line-up with his third home run of the weekend and a 4-of-7 day at the plate.
USF (15-24, 9-17 NSIC) plated the first five runs of the game, including three in the first inning against starter Wes Mleziva, but UMD turned around with six runs in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead for senior reliever
Chris Couillard they would not relent as three Bulldog relievers combined to hold the Cougars hitless over the final three innings. Goff got the scoring started with an RBI single, while run-scoring doubles by sophomore
Jimmy Heck and senior
Cody Aasen, as well as a two-run single for sophomore
Alex Wojciechowski, who was 3-of-4 in game one, gave the Bulldogs the lead.
Game two saw a bit more drama for both teams. The Cougars scored the game's first run on a steal of home plate by freshman right fielder Michael Downs, who punished UMD pitching with a pair of doubles on the afternoon. Senior centerfielder
Kellen McCoshen tied up the game with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, but USF answered with a sacrifice fly and an RBI by Downs in the very next inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Wojciechowski added his third RBI of the day in the sixth inning on a groundout and Comer lifted a two-out single to tie the game later in the inning, but Sioux Falls again answered with a run in the top of the seventh. After Aasen singled to lead off the ninth, pinch runner
Ryan Lakin stole second and then advanced to third on an errant throw. He wouldn't need the extra based as Comer hit a triple to bring home the game-tying run. Late game strategy backfired for USF as the Cougars intentionally walked Goff and Vogt to load the bases. USF reliever Derek Fischer got the next two outs, but plunked Denisen to send in the game-winning run, and secure a series sweep for the Bulldogs.
UMD is set to host NSIC action again this Wednesday at Bulldog Park though field conditions remain a question mark due to last week's snowfall. Stay tuned to umdbulldogs.com for updates.
