The University of Minnesota Duluth completed a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series sweep of the University of Minnesota, Crookston, downing the Golden Eagles, 4-1 and 15-5, in a doubleheader at the UMC Baseball Field in Crookston on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (18-23, 14-17 NSIC) won 11 of 15 games down the stretch but will end their season on the outside looking in at the eight-team NSIC Tournament field. UMD did see improvement as they finished with four more wins than in 2013 and matched the team's league win total of a year ago. Minnesota Crookston ends its season winless in NSIC play at 0-35, and 1-46 overall.

Sunday's doubleheader followed a similar formula to the two team's meeting a day ago as the Bulldogs got a solid pitching performance while junior designated hitter Beau Goff contributed much of the team's scoring punch. Officially, Goff was 0-for-1, but a pair of RBI sacrifice flies scored Cody Aasen in the fourth and sixth innings. Freshman outfielder Matt Vogt tripled home a run in the fifth, while first-year utility man Kyle Hoffman plated another run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. A day after making good on his lone trip to the plate of the season with an RBI double, senior pitcher Chris Couillard took the hill and pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits over seven innings with just one run allowed on a three-hit sixth before enducing a double play to get out of the inning with minimal damage. Couillard struck out a pair and walked two as he moved to 4-1 on the season. Golden Eagles starter Trevor Buttermore drops to 1-9, also allowing just eight hits but four runs, including three earned. He struck out five Bulldogs on the afternoon.

Again similar to Saturday's game two, the Bulldogs offensive exploded for 15 runs and downed Crookston in eight innings (mercy) in the series finale. UMD plated four in the first to get the offense started, scoring at least a run in every odd-numbered inning before finally dropping five on UMC pitching in the deciding inning. The Eagles did most of their damage in the fifth with four of their five runs scored off the Bulldogs relief corps, but it was too little, too late as sophomore starter Kyle Fritz picked up the victory to move to 2-2 on the season. Eight UMD pitchers took the mound with four pitching a hitless inning. Pierce was one of three Bulldogs with a triple in the game as UMD mashed five extra-base hits.

The bottom of the order did much of the damage for UMD as freshman shorstop Brian Pierce and senior centerfielder Kellen McCoshen each drove in four runs in the nightcap, with senior designated hitter Max Ryan finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored out of the seventh slot. UMC starter Jon Mittag dropped to 0-7 on the season with 11 hits and nine runs allowed in four innings.
