The University of Minnesota Duluth knew going in that the Jack Johnson Classic was going to be the most challenging event on its 2015 indoor track and field schedule. The two-day meet, which wrapped up Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of Minnesota, lived up to those expectations --Â and the Bulldogs were up to the challenge.
UMD, which sent a handful of athletes to the meet, received several top-five finishes, the first of which was turned in by freshman
McKenzie Holt on Friday. The St. Cloud, Minn., native placed fourth behind three NCAA Division I competitors in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:55.09. Senior captain
Amelia Maher wound up fifth in the women's high jump (5'-06.00" -- a mark bettered by four individuals from exclusively NCAA I institutions) while sophomore
Breanna Colbenson finished sixth overall -- and second among non-NCAA I runners -- in the 3,000-meter race (10:06.35).
The Bulldogs' strongest collective showing at the Jack Johnson Classic came in the mile run where they placed three individuals among the the top seven finishers -- junior captain and All-American
Hannah Olson (3rd; 4:56.09), freshman
Emilee Trost (6th; 4:57.13) and sophomore All-American
Samantha Rivard (7th; 4:57.70). Olson, Trost and Rivard all provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
UMD will remain in Duluth next Saturday to compete in the Lake Superior Challenge at the College of St. Scholastica.
