Box Score The good news for the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team is that its season-opening unprecedented six-game away stand is finally over. The bad news is that the Bulldogs probably wish they had the ending back.
No. 9 Bemidji State University needed overtime Saturday in Bemidji, Minn. at the Sanford Center to defeat a savvy UMD squad by a score of 2-1. With the overtime game-winner, the Beavers sweep UMD for the first time in their long rivalry. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play.
For the third time this season, UMD found its way to the scoreboard first when junior forward
Demi Crossman forced a turnover in the neutral zone and scored short-handed with just 22 seconds left in the first period.
The Bulldogs 1-0 lead lasted just 4:53 into the second period, however, when BSU's Kristin Huber knotted the skate at 1-1. It was a goaltending duel from there, with UMD rookie netminder Maddie Rooney posting 22 saves in the second and third periods, while her counterpart for the Beavers, Brittni Mowat, turned away 15 shots in over the same 40 minutes. Both goaltenders had two saves in overtime, but BSU's Lauren Miller finally solved Rooney 3:21 into extra time to seal the sweep for the unbeaten Beavers, who at 5-0-1 are off to their best start in school history.
Rooney had a total of 26 stops in her second start as a Bulldog, while Mowat, who is 5-0 on the season, made 31. UMD outshot BSU 32-28 and recorded whopping 12-4 shots on goal advantage in the second period.
UMD finally heads home to AMSOIL next Friday and Saturday to host Minnesota State University, Mankato. Game-time for Friday is slated for 7:07 p.m., while Saturday will get underway at 3:07 p.m.
