Box Score It was the Bulldogs turn to look like the experienced squad Saturday afternoon inside Conte Forum.
The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team gave No. 2 Boston College all it could handle in its 4-2 loss -- a score that incorrectly represents the game by highlighting a late empty-net goal for BC with 11 seconds remaining. UMD, which clearly had the jump on the Eagles in the third period, out-shot BC 15-7 and mustered everything but a game-tying goal in the effort.
The Eagles struck first, capitalizing on a deflection that managed to beat freshman goaltender
Maddie Rooney 11:10 into the first period. BC doubled its lead at the 14:37 mark of the second period, but UMD responded 2:07 later on a strike by senior forward
Michela Cava (
Demi Crossman,
Maria Lindh). A mere 58 seconds, the Eagles stretched their lead back out to 3-1, and entered the second intermission with a two-goal lead and a shot advantage of 26-19.
UMD's effort owned the third period, however, and the Bulldogs pulled within a single goal at 5:06 on a score from Lindh (
Reagan Haley). The 3-2 scoreboard lit a fire under the UMD, and the Bulldogs peppered BC goaltender Katie Burt for the final 15 minutes of action. Eagle senior Alex Carpenter finally buried an empty-netter to secure a hat-trick and the BC win with 11 seconds remaining.
Rooney was spectacular in her Bulldog starting debut, turning away 29 of the 33 shots she faced. Overall, the Bulldogs outshot BC 34-33 in the contest, and kept the BC power play harmless in four extra skater attempts.
"I'm really happy with our effort this weekend," said head coach
Maura Crowell about the BC series. "I think that we showed that the Bulldogs can compete at the highest level. It's going to be a very exciting year for UMD."
The Bulldogs will kick-off Western Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend in Bemidji, Minn., when UMD takes on Bemidji State. Game time for Friday;s contest is set for 7:07 p.m., while Saturday's skate will get underway at 2:07 p.m.
