The University of Minnesota Duluth used the three-point shot to its advantage and out-rebounded St. Cloud State University as the Bulldogs picked up their first victory in St. Cloud since 1994, knocking off their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Confernece rival 100-92 on the road on Saturday afternoon.
UMD (8-3, 5-1 NSIC) sought history in St. Cloud, taking a 21-year winless streak at Hallenbeck Hall into the game. The Bulldogs use the three-point shot effectively in the first half, getting a trio of threes each from sophomore guard

Brendon Pineda as the team went 8-of-19 from beyond the arc in the first half. UMD scored the game's first five points and led by as much as seven in the first half at 40-33 before St. Cloud State (4-7, 2-4 NSIC) hit free throws late to cut the deficit down to four, but freshman forward Sean Burns laid-in a score to give UMD a 42-36 lead headed to the locker room. The Bulldogs out-rebounded SCSU 25-17 with 11 different players grabbing a board in the first 20 minutes.
The visiting team continued to pour it on from three-point range early in the second half and totalled 13 threes while also making good on 33-of-39 free throws on the game after starting 23-of-24. St. Cloud State got some momentum going early in the second half, but those five extra three pointers pushed UMD over the top as they extended the lead out to 18 at 75-57 with 6:21 remaining and held on the rest of the way despite a late comeback effort. Pineda dominated on the offensive end, finishing 5-of-9 from three and scoring a career-high 35 points on the afternoon. Senior guards

Taylor Lavery would each finish with 18 points, and Newton matched Pineda with a team-high eight rebounds. St. Cloud State led for just 57 seconds in the game, holding a slight lead at 33-31 but couldn't complete a comeback effort in the second half despite Scottie Stone finishing with a team-high 20 points for the Huskies.
The Bulldogs will end the first half on a high note with the history-making victory, whicho marked the first time UMD swept the season series against St. Cloud State since the teams started playing twice regularly in 2004-05. The Bulldogs hadn't notched triple digits since Dec. 2, 2011 when they knocked off the University of Minnesota-Crookston 101-68.
UP NEXTUMD will now be off for nearly two weeks for the holiday break. The Bulldogs will play host to Concordia University, St. Paul after the new year on Saturday, Jan. 2. Opening tip is set for 4:00 p.m., following the women's contest.
