Becky Smith put on an offensive clinic to headline the University of Minnesota Duluth, en rout to a split over a pair of Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association teams -- Missouri Western State University (7-5) and Ouachita Baptist University (5-7) -- on the final
day of the University of Arkansas-Monticello 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark.Smith, the native of Long Lake, Minn., tallied a pair of home runs (her first and second of her young collegiate career) including a two-run bomb to left center in the second inning and a go-ahead two-run shot four frames later to break a five-all game. The Long Lake, Minn. native, knocked in five of the Bulldogs' seven runs against the Griffons (5-4) with three extra base hits. Overall, the rookie sensation
racked up five hits and seven runs batted in on the day.
UMD (5-4) played from behind the majority of the game versus Ouachita Baptist after surrendering three home runs. The Bulldogs, at one point, rallied to tie the game briefly in the fourth after falling into an early 3-0 deficit. Smith and junior catcher Ashley Lewis sliced the lead to 3-2 an inning before junior outfielder Ashley Schilling tied the game at three with her solo round-tripper. Schilling, the product of Omaha, Neb., connected once more in the sixth for her second homer of the game.The Bulldogs totaled 13 hits versus the Tigers in the final game. UMD returns to the diamond Wednesday, Feb. 18 when they square off in a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center in West St. Paul, Minn. The two-game set is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start time.
