The University of Minnesota Duluth capped off its second sweep of the young 2015 season by defeating the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 6-3 and 4-3 in a pair of non-conference assignments
at the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center Wednesday.
In the opener, the Bulldogs (5-2 overall) broke through in the bottom of the third with five runs. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman shortstop
Becky Smith drove in two on a double down the left field line and junior third baseman
Sami Schnyder pushed a RBI single up the middle on the next at-bat. Sophomore outfielder
Heather Woyak and senior first baseman
Jordan Rice each knocked in a run later as the Bulldogs batted around the lineup. Junior designated hitter
Abbey Nelson added the final insurance tally on a screeching double that flew over the head of the left fielder and hit the fence.
Sophomore hurler
Sam Hartmann pushed her record to 3-0 on the year after going five-plus innings and allowing one run while fanning three. Junior
Cayli Sadler came in relief and locked up the final two innings, giving up two runs. The pitching duo got a great defensive effort from second baseman
Mel Jarvi as the Duluth Denfeld/Central High School product turned a triple play in the sixth inning, snaring sharp liner for one out, touching second for another and throwing to first to complete the rare gem.
The rematch featured the Rangers (0-4 overall) striking first off Hartmann. A bases-clearing triple gave UWP a 3-0 lead, but UMD stormed back in the fourth to tie it. Rookie second baseman
Hannah Schmoll and Smith smashed
consecutive singles up the middle. Smith, who has hit safely in all seven outings this season and has racked up 14 RBIs in her past five games, later rifled a double over the right fielder with runners on first and second to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 edge. Sadler, a native of Brooklyn Park, Minn., took the rubber in the third and shut down the Rangers for her second victory, with a season-high 11 punchouts in five frames. The final eight Ranger outs were all strikeouts.
UMD returns to the WSP dome tomorrow for a non-conference twinbill against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Northern State University starting at 11 a.m.
