The University of Minnesota Duluth's four-match victory run came to a close Saturday morning via a 6-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference setback to Winona State University at the Fitness Evolution Tennis Center in Sartell, Minn. The Bulldogs then dropped an 8-1 decision to another league rival, Upper Iowa University, later that day to slip to 4-6 overall and an even 3-3 in the NSIC.
Winona State captured all three doubles events before splitting the six singles matches. Freshman
Shelby Benkofske (No. 3), sophomore
Drew DeCorsey (No. 4) and freshman
Jillian Klasen (No. 6) prevailed in their respective singles assignments and sophomore Kaitlyn Wohnoutka took her opponent to a tie-breaker but ultimately fell at No. 5. Against Upper Iowa (8-3 overall), the rookie tandem of
Katie Baasch and Kelsey Zetach teammed up for the first time this season and responded with a 9-8 (7-4) triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Benofske and Wohnoutka continue to lead the Bulldogs in singles victories and winning percentage (both at 6-4) while Benofske and DeCorsey sport UMD's best doubles record at 4-5.
UMD is now off for four weeks, returning to the court on March 28 to face St. Cloud State University in Sartell.
