The University of Minnesota Duluth took its show on the road for the first time in the young 2015 season and was suffered a pair of defeats Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
The Bulldogs succumbed 9-0 to St. Catherine University before being upended 8-1 by Northwestern University later that evening. Sophomore Kaitlin Wohnouta picked up UMD's lone victory on the day, defeating the Eagles' Rachel Bostrom in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) at No. 4 singles to hike her 2015 record to 2-1 (and her career mark to 7-6). Fresham Jillian Klassen lost in a tie breaker (10-5) at No. 5 singles in that match with Northwestern University, the defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference champion.
Against St. Catherine, freshman Shelby Benofske took her No. 4 singles opponent to a tie-breaker before falling 10-8 while the while the Wildcats Alicia Knoll and Jessica Duda also needed a tiebreaker to take down the UMD rookie tandem of
Emma Bartels and
Katie Baasch.
The Bulldogs (0-3 overall) will make their 2015 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference debuts next Saturday (Feb. 14) with matches against both the University of Mary and Minnesota State University-Moorhead in St. Cloud, Minn.
