Hits weren't a problem for the University of Minnesota Duluth Wednesday morning in its loss to Philadelphia University -- but timely ones were. The Bulldogs, who had bested the Rams 4-1 two days earlier, racked up 10 hits, but stranded 11 base runners in a 5-4 setback that halted their five-game winning streak. Pace University then handed UMD just its second shutout setback of 2015, a 2-0 blanking.
Philadelphia got four of their five total hits and all five of their runs in the second and third innings, with the decisive knock being a two-out, two-run homer in the third that put the Rams up 5-2. Starting pitcher
Cayli Sadler took the loss despite retiring 13 of the game's final 14 batters. Freshman designated hitter
Alexia Klaas continued to swing a hot bat for UMD, going 3-for-3 with one double. In addition to driving in all four UMD runs, senior first baseman
Jordan Rice finished with two hits as did junior third baseman
Sami Schnyder and junior catcher
Ashley Lewis.
UMD sophomore
Sam Hartmann fanned 11 and yielded just six hits in the hard-luck loss to Pace. The Setters (8-2 overall) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, then let pitcher Caitlin McCann take it from there as she allowed just two Bulldogs to reach base (freshman center fielder
Hannah Schmoll and Klaas with singles) the entire game. UMD had torched opposition pitching to the tune of 50 runs in their previous six outings.
The Bulldogs (14-7) will face Caldwell College, which was ranked 22nd in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association II Poll, twice tomorrow in their Florida farewells.
