After a four-week layoff, the University of Minnesota Duluth returned to the court -- and the road -- over the weekend and went 1-2 against three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes.
The Bulldogs fell 5-4 to St. Cloud State University Saturday morning in Sartell, Minn., and then were upended by Minnesota State University-Mankato 6-3 later in the day in St. Peter, Minn., before bouncing back with a 6-3 triumph over Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday. That match also took place at the Swanson Tennis Center on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Wohnoutka went a perfect 3-0 in singles over the weekend, picking up wins at No. 5 against both St. Cloud State and Minnesota State-Mankato and No. 4 against Southwest Minnesota State. That pushed her 2014-15 record to 9-4 (6-3 vs. NSIC competition. Freshman
Jillian Klasen prevailed at No. 6 singles in
each match Saturday, but was defeated by the Mustangs' Ashley Hoehne at No. 5. The Bulldogs (5-8 overall; 4-5 NSIC) also got singles victories on Sunday from senior Kara Saemann (No. 2), and freshmen Shelby Benkofske (No. 3) and Kelsey Zetah (No. 6).
Zetah and fellow rookie Katie Baasch posted three straight doubles triumphs (No. 3) while Benofske and sophomore Drew DeCorsey (No. 2 vs. St. Cloud State and Southwest Minnesota State) and Saeman and senior Alyssa Brunelli (No. 1 vs. St. Cloud State) also were victorious in one or more matches. Zetah and Baasch are now 4-0 on the year.
Next up for UMD is a pair of NSIC road engagements against the University of Sioux Falls and Augustana College on April 11 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
