The University of Minnesota Duluth continued a weekend-long power surge, led by junior first baseman
Alex Wojciechowski, as the Bulldogs completed a four-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series sweep of Bemidji State University in a doubleheader at Bulldog Park in Duluth on Saturday afternoon.
UMD (23-11, 17-7 NSIC) stands alone in third place in the NSIC, extending its winning streak to seven games and nine of the team's last ten, defeating Bemidji State (10-29, 7-17 NSIC) by a score of 9-5 in game one and 14-4 in a shortened, seven-inning game two.
The Beavers scored first in each game, including a four-run lead in game two, thanks in part to a pair of early fielding errors by the Bulldogs. A day after launching five home runs, UMD lifted four more as part of 11 extra-base hits in the doubleheader sweep. Sophomore southpaw
Kevin Stocke picked up the victory in game one, tossing the first five innings, scattering five hits and striking out five while allowing just a pair of earned runs. Sophomore righty
Justin Kunkel and senior closer
Wes Mleziva closed out game one, each picking up a pair of strikeouts in an inning pitched.
Wojciechowski drove in nine runs, going 7-for-7 with a pair of walks and five runs scored. He had two homers and two doubles in game two, including a grand slam that put UMD up 11-4 in the fifth inning of the second game. After sophomore left fielder
Grant Farley homered in the sixth inning, Wojciechowski would double-home UMD's 13th run in the seventh inning, and came around to score on a single by sophomore shortstop
Brian Pierce, to walk off the mercy ruled victory.
Junior lefty
Kyle Fritz picked up his first victory of the season out of the bullpen, as the Bulldog pen held Bemidji State hitless in three innings of game two after freshman righty
Nick Dorfman allowed four runs in a four-inning no decision. UMD took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch, with Wojciechowski and junior third baseman
Kyle Comer adding insurance in the inning. Comer, who lifted a home run in game one, was 4-for-6 with four runs batted in and two scored.
Junior right-hander
Matt Mattiacci couldn't replicate his immaculate inning last time out, but came close - striking out two and putting down the the Beavers in order.
UP NEXTUMD continues its six-game homestand Wednesday when the Bulldogs plast host to Upper Iowa University in a conference rematch to its non-conference doubleheader earlier this month. Opening pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. in Duluth.
