BEATT'S BOOT AND WRIGHT'S SHUTOUT GIVE BULLDOGS A WIN OVER NORTHERN MICHIGAN

Junior forward Kailey Beatt booted a pair of goals and freshman goalkeeper Carlye Wright grabbed five saves in a 3-0 victory for the University of Minnesota Duluth over perennial non-conference rival Northern Michigan University on Sunday afternoon at Malosky Stadium in Duluth.

UMD (1-2-0) needed just one of the scores from Beatt to knock off the Wildcats, who fall to 0-4-0 on the young season, though the insurance helped the Bulldogs' young goalkeeper maintain her first career shutout. UMD's defense played stout as well, particularly holding in check Northern Michigan top scorer Paula Hafner, holding the junior forward to just four shots and a pair on-net after she reigned as the league MVP for the Wildcats a year ago. Beatt's first of the day came on a crossing pass by junior forward Marissa Ganske, deflected by a defender to sophomore forward Hailey Hoff, who sent it across to Beatt for a wide-open look. She made good on another defensive miscue for her second score of the day, as an NMU defender deflected a ball straight to her before she slipped one past the diving goaltender, Alexandra Simmons. Simmons would play steadily, stopping three balls on the day but gave up a rebound of her own.

The Bulldogs added one more late in the day to seal the victory as sophomore midfielder Nicole Becker netted the first of her career, assisted by freshman Lizzy Fontes. Each of those tallies marked the first of the careers of Becker and Fontes.

CORNER KICKS
Beatt led the way for UMD with four shots on the day, making good on both of her on-target shots ... Becker, junior defender Skye Finley, and junior forward Katie Peterson all had two shots for the Bulldogs ... Hafner was the only Wildcat with multiple shots, with three other players combining for the remainder of their seven attempts (five on-net) ... UMD improves to 13-4-3 against Northern Michigan, avenging a defeat by the Wildcats in 2014.

UP NEXT
UMD hits the road on Tuesday evening to begin conference play against St. Cloud State University. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs will return to Malosky Stadium next Saturday and Sunday for more Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
