UMD CAN'T CONTAIN RED-HOT MINOT STATE IN RETURN TO ROMANO GYM

The University of Minnesota Duluth suffered just its first home defeat of 2015-16, dropping a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match-up against Minot State University 94-64 on Friday night at Romano Gym. UMD (13-6, 9-4 NSIC) turned the ball over 10 times overall and shot just 30.8 percent in the second half while trying to make a comeback against Minot State (10-9, 5-8 NSIC).

The Bulldogs and Beavers went back-and-forth to start the game but a series late in the first half saw UMD fall behind by 12 thanks to 10 straight points by Minot State in the span from 2:42 remaining to 1:29, making good on a Bulldog turnover and a pair of missed threes. After shooting 41.9 percent (13-of-31) in the first half including 5-of-14 from three-point range, the Bulldogs were just 8-of-26 after the break to finish at 36.8 percent overall. Minot State shot 63.6 percent (21-of-33) in the first half, hitting five three-pointers in each half, and only saw its shooting percentage dip below 60 late in the second half when they emptied their bench with a large lead.

UMD was led by senior forward Brendon Pineda's 22 points and senior guard Taylor Lavery's 12 points. Senior guard Junior Coleman added nine points and three assists off the bench. Sophomore forward Jake Wilson had a team-high six rebounds in a reserve role for the Bulldogs to go with five points on the night. Minot State saw four players reach double digits and two more with at least nine as they fell six points shy of the century mark. Senior forward Winston Williams posted a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

UMD continues its four-game homestand tomorrow afternoon as the Bulldogs play host to the University of Mary on Saturday evening in Duluth. Opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m., following the women's contest at Romano Gym.
