The University of Minnesota Duluth continued its winning streak in its first road stop of 2016 as the Bulldogs knocked off Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division rival Bemidji State University 92-83 on Saturday afternoon. UMD (12-3, 9-1 NSIC) made the most of its streaks in a back-and-forth game to eventually prevail in Bemidji's Sanford Center.
Bemidji State (6-7, 3-6 NSIC) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and extended it out to 20-10 with just 8:15 off the clock. The Bulldogs would open a streak of their own, scoring 15-of-19 points to take a 25-24 lead, thanks in large part to a pair of threes by senior guards
Pierre Newton and
Taylor Lavery. A big three-pointer gave the Beavers the lead again at 27-25 with 8:17 remaining in the period. Senior guard
Junior Coleman would be fouled on a three-point attempt in the final minute, scoring all three points from the free throw line to give UMD a late lead and then sunk a later three-point attempt and the Bulldogs went to the locker room leading 42-41.
The two teams traded runs early in the second half, with UMD scoring 10-of-14 points to take a 64-56 lead before Bemidji State bounced back with 10-of-13 to pull back within one. A pair of free throws by Newton would give UMD a two-point lead and also trigger another run for the Bulldogs as Lavery and Pineda each scored threes including a three-point play by Pineda that helped UMD pull away, extending its lead to a game-high 12 points with just 4:08 to go.From there, the Bulldogs hit enough free throws to keep the Beavers at bay.
Lavery and Newton would lead the Bulldog attack with 26 points each, while Pineda had 12 points in a start and Coleman added 17 off the bench. Newton led the way with seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. Lavery finished a perfect 14-of-14 from the free throw line, matching UMD's single-game best mark for free throws made without a miss. Four BSU players hit double digits scoring, led by senior guard D.J. Anderson's 20. Senior center Ben Best had eight rebounds to lead all players.
UMD will continue on the road tomorrow afternoon as the Bulldogs take on the University of Minnesota Crookston. Opening tip is set for 3:00 p.m. following the women's contest.
