Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

BULLDOGS AND UMASS LOWELL POWER THEIR WAY TO 4-4 DRAW

In hindsight, it would have been a wise move for both the University of Minnesota Duluth and the University of Massachusetts Lowell to spend more time than normal on their power play this past week because both units got quite a workout Friday night.

The two clubs combined to score six times on 19 opportunities with the man advantage while battling to a 4-4 overtime draw in Lowell, Mass. No. 6 UMD, making its 2016-17 road debut, scored the final three goals of the game to force overtime after trailing 4-1 with just under six minutes remaining in the second period.

Sophomore defenseman Neal Pionk, sophomore right winger Karson Kuhlman and senior defenseman Brenden Kotyk all struck on the power play and senior left winger Kyle Osterberg capped things off with an even-strength score -- his third goal of the year -- with 3:30 to go in regulation. UMD redshirt freshman Nick Deery, who replaced rookie Hunter Miska in goal immediately after the No. 8 River Hawks (0-0-1 overall) had taken a 4-1 lead, stopped all 13 shots he faced in the final 30:51 of play to earn the tie in his regular season collegiate debut. The Bulldogs, now 2-0-1 on the year, outshot the River Hawks 43-28 on the night -- and 21-10 in a dominating third period. They went 3-for-11 on the power play while UMass Lowell, which liked the Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament last spring, was 3-for-8.

The Bulldogs received the only power play chance of the overtime after River Hawk C.J. Smith was assessed a goaltender interference penalty -- and a UMass Lowell goal was waved off -- at the 2:23 mark.

The series finale will wrap up tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. (CT) faceoff at the Tsongas Center.
