The University of Minnesota Duluth made a point -- lots of them, in fact -- in its final 2016 regular season home appearance Saturday afternoon. The No. 18 Bulldogs scored early and often on the University of Mary before departing James S. Malosky Stadium with a 75-14 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division victory in tow.
The school-record 22nd consecutive home triumph and 200th lifetime Maloksy Stadium win pushed UMD's overall record to 9-1 with one week to go in the regular season.
The Bulldogs, who have now won nine straight, got touchdowns from seven different players, including two scores each from senior running back/wide out
Beau Bofferding, redshirt freshman running back
Bryce Heim, true freshman running back
Jaleen Jones, and sophomore tight end
Jack Sims. Sims caught a pair passes -- his first two as a collegian -- and parlayed both into touchdowns in the first half while helping the Bulldogs take a 54-14 lead into the break. Heim also found the end zone for the first time in a Bulldog uniform as did redshirt freshman quarterback
Mike Rybarczyk (a nine-yard run late in the third quarter) and redshirt freshman wide out
Obi Ibeneme (a 35-yard strike from senior quarterback
Drew Bauer). In addition, junior outside linebacker
Zach Bassuener also got into the scoring act by recovering a fumble in the Mary end zone following a 46-yard interception return by teammate and first-year freshman cornerback
Bishop McDonald. It was his second career touchdown.
UMD amassed 610 yards of total offense, its largest output in three seasons, including a season-high 349 yards on the ground. Bofferding led all rushers with 109 yards (his second 100-yard run afternoon at UMD) on just nine carries while Jones ran seven times for 70 yards. Bauer, whose day ended one play into the third quarter before being relieved by Rybarczyk, completed 13 of 17 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns in his shortest appearance of the 2016 season. Ibeneme had a game-high six receptions for 93 yards and was one of seven Bulldogs to haul in a pass.
UMD held the Marauders (1-9 overall) to just 249 total yards and 14 first downs on the afternoon while defeating them for the 10th time in 10 lifetime tries. Junior defensive back
Kale Boomer came off the bench to register a team-high eight total tackles for the Bulldogs, who had three sacks to push their season total to an NSIC-best 43. UMD also recorded its first multi-interception game this fall as McDonald and redshirt freshman free safety
Bill Atkins (his second in as many weeks) both came away with picks. UMD forced seven fumbles and recovered five of those miscues.
"It was very important to give some of our newer guys a lot of reps today," said UMD head coach
Curt Wiese, whose Bulldogs clinched their ninth consecutive NSIC North Division title. "I like the way they responded."
The 75 points were the fourth-highest single-game total in program history and two points shy of the team record set four years ago at the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Bulldogs, who are now 31-0 all-time against NSIC North Division foes at Malosky Stadium, will pay a visit to St. Cloud State University next Saturday for their 2016 regular season finale.
